It’s happening! Tanja Hüberli and Nina Betschart reached the semi-finals of the Swatch Major Gstaad to keep their dream of winning a cowbell on home sand after another thrilling match on the Center Court.
The Swiss pair did it the hard way – why would it be any different? – coming from behind after losing the first to Andrea Strbova and Natalia Dubovcova 21-14.
But back by a packed Gstaadium crowd, Tanja and Nina surged back to win in three sets, taking the second 21-18 and the tiebreaker 15-9.
The pair now face Americans Alix Klineman and April Ross on Sunday aiming to be the first Swiss women to ever reach a Gstaad final.
Having reached the semi-finals of the World Championships in Hamburg last week, it’s another superb performance for the duo who now begin to play to face an opponent that has beaten them in both previous meetings.
“We will watch some games and prepare – we played them in Warsaw so we know how they like to play,” said Tanja afterwards. “But we will do everything as normal, we’ll do nothing different to what we have done in the past two weeks. We’ll discuss things with our coach and concentrate on our game.”
On the first set reverse, Tanja added: “It was a tough start to the game, I made a lot of errors and we didn’t find the rhythm.
“It was tougher than in the last weeks but we tried everything.”
Can they do it? Find out on Sunday!
